Self care has become a trendy buzz word in recent time, but it’s something I think most of us “millennials” have been partaking in since their college years. We are a generation of creative entrepreneurs who most likely won’t have social security and most likely won’t be able to retire at a normal age and will live for way too long because technology in health is an ever-so-expanding field (forget commas, that deserves one breath), so we don’t want to burn out in our 20s and 30s. But anyway, enough about the politics of it all, let’s talk about the importance (and fun) of self care.
A lot of us are getting away from the desk jobs of the past and into the community. Constantly interacting with others for a living can be exhausting. As a personal trainer, I am talking all day with my clients and sometimes feel like their therapist. While I love it and wouldn’t trade it for anything, I don’t always want to come home to get ready to socialize at a bar. I want to sit at home and care for myself. I see this being the trend among so many of my friends working in similar environments. So much to the point that when we get together to hang out, we do it in our PJs on someone’s couch. This decompression period is important. We need to unplug from the world and unwind from our lives and veg in front of the TV with a glass (or bottle) of wine from time to time. You need to check in with yourself! Personally, for me, this is a weekly top priority.

Start with a yoga class–or something more high intensity if you’re feeling it. Something for you though. Something that will bring you joy. For me, it’s an hour and a half at an empty Friday night gym.
From there, head home and go straight to the shower!Who doesn’t love a nice warm shower after a long day? My favorite thing to do is get messy with Frank Body Scrub. Frank is a naturally derived coffee based body (and face) scrub that helps scrub away dead skin cells and imperfections. Used regularly, it can help to diminish scars, acne, stretch marks, and cellulite. It also just makes your skin glowy and soft and amazing, which is worth it in and of itself!
It comes in 4 different scents; original, coconut, cacao, and peppermint. I find peppermint to be the most soothing and calming of the bunch.
Post shower, my love for Frank grows. I moisturize my extremely dry [especially in the winter] skin with Frank’s coconut body balm.
It smells amazing and makes your soft just-scrubbed skin last even longer.
I tend to do my nails on self care nights, usually in a neutral shade because there’s something clean and calming about a sandy or soft pink color on your nails. While I do my nails, I pop on my favorite Lush mask, Mask of Magnaminty.
Again, the peppermint scent just brings me right to Spa-land. The gentle beads in the mask do some fantastic exfoliating, and I swear, any pimples that I may have under my skin come right to the surface for easy removal after wearing this bad boy for 20 minutes (or more because I get lazy).
Once my skin and nails are taken care of and I’m nearing the end of my bottle of wine, I hop on the Bravo train with some Housewives, Pump Rules, or, my new found love, Summer House (it’s like the rich people version of Jersey Shore and it’s amazing). Introduced to me by my best yoga-friend, Liz, I slip on my toe separators. I know this sounds weird, but there is something real about a little reflexology. Not to mention, it just feels good to have your toes and feet stretched after a long day of running around. You can get them here or on Amazon, or any yoga company (Gaiam for example).
And then, I veg. I veg until I can veg no more and then get into bed and wake up a new woman! I urge you to forgo all your plans this Friday night and just stay in and take care of YOU.
